I had a lot of fun making this dinner with my sister, mom and myself. We always have either breakfast, lunch or dinner gathering at each other homes. Each week we make time to spend at one another homes. Family time is very important to us and one of the best ways to be together is FOOD. Since our family is from Guyana, Suriname, Panama and India we have a lot of different dishes to enjoy from. I learned this dish from my mom and it is one of our favorite!!  At the end of this dish we enjoyed the chocolate with some cold organic milk
PS. Left over chicken curry and rice with salad tasted even better the next day for lunch at work.

We should educate young kids regarding the danger of smoking and  the use of other drugs that can harm them and their bodies. There are limited resources that provides schools, parents and kids about the dangers of drugs. Everyone has their favorite actor who they look up and wants to be like them, especially young kids.Considering most kids are watching television all the time, we need to restrict them of what they can watch and what they can't. In the mean time we also need to teach them why it is so important to stay away from drugs what they can do to prevent themselves from using it. Having more advertisements about drugs and the dangers it can do to your body , I think it will help and reduce the percentage of young kids addicted to drugs.
In a survey published by Dr. James D. Sargent , kids between the ages 10-14 years  that watches R-rated movies containing smoking and other drugs  are more likely to smoke and destroy their lives.
Kids are not only exposed by drugs in movies, but at home and school. Parents are the first role models to their kids, in fact most  kids wants to be like their mom or dad at one point in their life. One of my friend who I thought  would never smoke because we were always against it and said to each that we would never do drugs or smoke. One day she informed me that she was addicted to smoking a whole pack of cigarette  a day. I was obviously very sad and devastated at that point, but tried to understand why and how she started to smoke. It happened when she was a very young age , when she saw her dad smoking and she started to steal the cigarette from her dad. At first it was just a try, but then it became  a habit. She stated that she just wanted to try because it looked cool and nothing happened to her dad's health.  At that time also many parents did not have that type of education to inform their kids that smoking is bad for your health. Even at school we were not educated much about smoking and what the consequences. For example smoking can give you cancer or have hearth and lung problems. Now there are more pictures ,commercial , billboards regarding companies that provide  services to get help if you want to quite smoking or if you want to quite using other drugs like cocaine or marijuana than before.

Thirty- Eight percent of kids tend to imitate their favorite actors from  different types of movies. Many kids would dress, talk, and even end up doing drugs just to stand out around their piers. In the passage "Children who had the greatest exposure to smoking in movies were more than two and a half times as likely to start smoking as those who had the lowest exposure." Yes, kids will try to be and act like their favorite actor at home , in school and among their friends just to impress the people around them and also for attention. Kids are exposed to smoking from small when they watch television. For example , watching cartoon when Tom and Jerry smoking cigars and even drinking wine to impress their girlfriends. I have seen kids try to take a lollipop stick or a Popsicle stick  and pretend to smoke because they saw it on television. Now how can you explain to 2 or 3 year old that what he or she did is wrong and can harm your life, when Tom and Jerry is one of their favorite show and characters. It's up to us now to protect our kids from not only television, but also their favorite characters who are showing them that smoking and drugs are cool.

There are many ways we can help young kids from staying away from drugs. We need to have  have strict regulations  and rules on all businesses that produce cigarette and other type of drugs to companies that sell these products.  Creating more awareness in school and movies can help prevent young kids from using drugs.

Individuals in Groups

Something happens to individuals when they are in groups. They think and act differently than they would on their own. Most people, if they observe some disaster or danger on their own- a woman being stabbed ,  a pedestrian slammed by a hit- and -run driver- will at least call for help;  many will even risk their own safety to intervene. But if they are in a group observing the same danger, they hold back. The reason has more to do with the nature of groups than the nature of the individuals.

In one experiment in behavioral psychology, students were seated in a room, either alone or in groups of three, as a staged emergency occurred: Smoke began pouring  through the vents. Students who were on their own usually hesitated a minute, got up,  checked the vents and then went out to report what certainly seemed like a fire. But the students who were sitting in groups of three did not move. They sat there for six minutes, with smoke so thick they could barely see, rubbing their eyes and coughing.

In another experiment, psychologists staged a situation in which people overheard a loud crash, a scream an a woman in pain, moaning that her ankle was broken. Seventy percent of those who were alone when the "accident" occurred went to her aid,  compared with only 40 percent of those who heard her in the presence of another person.

Psychologists  call this "diffusion of responsibility " or "social loafing." The more people in a group, the lazier each individual in it becomes. Often, observers think nothing needs to be done because someone else has already taken care of it, and the more observers there are, the less likely  any one person is to call for help.

Adapted from " In Groups We Shrink" by Carol Tavris. Originally published in the Los Angels Times, 1991.

Sample Essay Response

People are not the same when they are in a group. A person is smart, responsible, reasonable, and hardworking. A person cares for others and knows his or her moral standing. People are unintelligent, scared , lazy and onlooking. People seem to think  that its always some elses problem All they can do is watch so thats what they will do. Yes, a person is less likely to act if no else is acting. Even if it is the moral or professional duty of a person to help or act. they may fail if they feel out numbered.

Carol Tavris says from her "In Groups We Shrink" that , in groups , people have, what Psychologist call, "diffusion of responsibility" or " social loafing".

Experiments show that students, in a room filling with smoke, would be more likely to call for help if they were alone. This is contrary to the test with multiple students who would sit there and allow the smoke to fill the  room. In a real life situation the people who do not act upon smoke is not likely to survive.

This is contrary to the test with multiple students who would sit there and allow the smoke to fill the room. In a real life situation the people who do not act upon smoke is not likely to survive.

This behavior is  not restricted to young college students which have little life experience. In a surveillance video of a parking lot, a man was stabbed and them mugged. The assailant escape leaving the man bleeding. The man gathered enough strenght  to stumble in front of the traffic going though  the parking lot. He might have though to himself that this would be a fast way to get help. The drivers proved him wrong. Cars would drive around him to avoid him. Perhaps these people did  not want to hold up traffic. Each minute wasted is more blood drained.  Even a school bus carefully tried to avoid him. The man, knelt down hold his arms up with blood on them  Finally a lone man got out of his car and assisted the man to the hospital. It took almost an hour for someone to decide to help and it was during a gap where the savior was alone with no traffic and no passenger.

At the hospital one could be  treated for whatever ailments one may have. That is why the stab victim wanted to go so badly. But even at the hospital there is no guarantee. At one New York City hospital, a elderly  woman collapsed due to a heart condition in the lobby. All the people waiting watched as she hit the floor. However they returned to whatever they were doing. Minutes go by and activity around her remained normal. Doctors were seen walking passed and then disappearing past the camera. Almost an hour passes by and finally a guard is seen feeling her pulse. After ten minutes a stretcher comes to take her away. What took so long ? Whatever the case may be  the assured thought was that some else must be handling it.

There are cases of individuals who would help despite other people. But the general masses are always onlookers. As seen, students seem to disregard their own life from laziness. even adults and professionals are guilty of this. This is the nature of people. That is why there are heroes in the world. There needs to be a balance.

#2. Red Pill or Blue Pill ?

I don't want to have a choice to pick a pill that will decide the  outcome of my life, however if I had to pick I would pick both because sometime the truth can help me in life and sometimes it can hurt really bad.If you look at the cultures around the world, many people kept the  life styles because it would be easier for society to accept us. Some people are not ready to a change their 9am to 5pm job for an adventure to go and explore the world because they are satisfied and happy the way they live. We are also afraid to know the truth or take risks thinking that it would have a negative impact in our lives and the people around us.
In the Matrix , Neo was not aware that one day his entire life would change by choosing a pill. He was told by Morphues that he was in a world where computers controlled the humans and in order to see the real world he would have to choose the "Red Pill" to know the truth about the Matrix. Neo wanted to know the truth even though he knew it could be a life and dead situation for him. Morphues stated to Neo that it would be a difficult tasks to try and convince other people living in the "Matrix" that they are being controlled by a computer because they are so use to living a certain way and follow the system, therefore they would do anything to save the "Matrix".
However, in life we have a choice to either know the truth and accept or not to know and think about it for the rest of our lives what would happen if we only knew what the truth was.

                                    #4 Fate or Free Will?

"Fate" a believe which a lot of people believe in and "Free Will" is a choice that we make in life to go against what we believe in my opinion. I believe that "Fate" brought my husband and I together , because we met each other in the hall way of Laguardia Community College 12 years ago and now we have a beautiful family. We both came from different parts of South America and ended up in New York in the same college.
It was difficult for my family to accept him in the beginning because we came from two different culture and backgrounds and they were afraid that we would not understand each other. I made my choice and did not care about what anyone thought concerning my decision I made.
In the movie "Matrix" Neo had  his  "Free Will " and choose to save Morphues from the agent Smith, it was his own  decision  even though Trinity his girlfriend in the movie told him not to because he (Neo) was the One to save everyone from the "Matrix. However Neo went against her will and saved Morpheus and later became the One to save everyone from the Matrix.

Most People Do not want Freedom

In my opinion most people do not want freedom because it would change their everyday life styles which they are accustomed too. Some people are afraid taking risks , thinking that it would harm them or make their lifes more difficult than it is. For example in the "Allegory of the Cave" a few prisoner were kept in a cave since childhood , not having any knowlegde of the real world they thought the cave was their world. All they saw were shadows and  heard noices. One of the prisoner was released from the cave to go and explore what is outside of the cave, he took a risk to change his life not knowing if that would harm in anyway or if he would come back alive or not . He learned that there is a real world out there other than the cave then came back and tried to convince the other prisoners that there is more out there than the cave which  is  "Freedom". The prisoners did not believe him and stated that was insane. In my opinion everyone  is making their own "Freedom" in their everyday lives. Some people like to work 9am to 5pm , go home have dinner, watch t.v. and go to sleep. Others don't like working 9am to 5pm , instead they work either from home or from the park. You have a choice in life either take a risk and change your life or stick to the routine that makes you happy and call that your "Freedom".

Blog # 7 , 'Why People Think They 're Living In A Reality Show " is the one I am going to discuss about in this paragraph. I am not going to say I am proud of this essay but this is the only one which was O.K. in my point of view. In the passage I gave details about myself linked to the article  and some examples. It was also written in an essay format which had a introduction, examples, and conclusion. However, after looking at my CATW practice essay today I know that there is much work to  be done in order for me to pass this class  and go to English 101.

Having the capabilities to practice and review my own essay helps me a lot by identifying where I need major help in, which is everything . The blog entries are also very helpful to me, because I can go back and proof read my own essays. Annotating long essay and pin pointing the claim,  reason and evidence gave  me a structure on how write an essay. The main problem I have to work on is to trying to grab the main points and write the first paragraph ( main idea). It's difficult but I know if I can practice writing more I can do it.

The tutorials and free rice grammar  practices  helped me a lot in my grammar and vocabulary sections, my only problem is to understand the main idea and focus on writing more with good examples . I am going  to practice more and  rewrite all my blogs , since I have an idea where I'm having trouble with. Reading an passage and respond to it, is my one of my major problem, so I tend to work on that first. The second problem is getting my ideas and essay structure in order. One way I know I can do this is by reading and practicing  more on the tutorials which help me a lot.

Why People Think They 're Living In A Reality Show by Colin Lecher, describes humans living in a world  filled delusion and paranoia. Delusion as stated in an article by Andrew Marantz are imagination of a world that does not exist or is not real. Similar to the "Truman Show" played by Jim Carrey, his life was based on a lie of a perfect world that revolves around him. In this present time most people are paranoid by the Government  watching over us with satellites and advanced cameras.

As Marantz said "People have always imagined things that aren't real".   I can relate to his statement because I  always imagined  that aliens are real and they do exist. One day  hopefully we discover a planet that has life other than earth, as we discovered the other planets in space.  Like the "Truman Show " one day we will discover a whole entire world with life's other than the one we live in.
The same way we discovered Mars and  other planets in space, we will see aliens or perhaps we will be the aliens  to the other planets.

As mentioned by Andrew Marantz, "Shifts in technology have caused the content of delusions to change over the years". In the past religion and culture played a huge part in everyone 's life, however as time past and technology advanced people started to detach themselves away from their culture to connect more towards technology. Now that technology is advancing every year we are getting more afraid regarding our privacy with the government and other internet websites. A few years back when I went on the  internet and just type in my name or even my nick name I receives a list of information with where I lived, who my relatives are  and even a picture of my house. Now at that time it scared m and  blew my mind thinking with just a click your entire life is presented to the world. I also work for a security company and I get paranoid sometimes because I think I am being watched in my office by a secret camera. Even though there aren't any camera there , I still look around my office sometimes . I do believe that the government does have an eye on our every move.

In conclusion we have to keep an open mind regarding the universe and know that we could not be the only one living in this world. Some people will still think that aliens are just an imagination in their minds or maybe the government just planned another hoax. Hopefully one day we can just take a break for a day to enjoy our life's without worrying who is watching over you.
